PROUDLY RUNNING LATE
The inaugural Oakland 5000, hosted by Renegade Running, was nothing short of electric. As the sun dipped below the horizon, runners of all paces took to the track in a celebration that blended fierce competition with a deep sense of community connection. The air buzzed with anticipation and excitement—each stride, cheer, and smile weaving together a powerful tapestry of resilience, joy, and shared purpose.
This wasn’t just a race; it was a gathering where people of color and runners from all walks of life came together to be seen, celebrated, and uplifted. The Oakland 5000 embodied Renegade Running’s mission to create space for voices often overlooked in the running world, turning the event into a vibrant movement of inclusion and empowerment.
At the heart of capturing this spirit was my role as the event’s photographer. Through my lens, I documented more than just the race—I captured moments that told the story of a community running together, united by strength and pride. These images reveal the grit, the joy, and the unbreakable bonds formed on the track. They allow participants to see themselves reflected in a powerful, inclusive moment, amplifying the Renegade Running brand and turning the community into its strongest voice.
In these photographs, the Oakland 5000 lives on—not just as a race, but as a visual testament to the power of visibility, representation, and collective celebration.
Race Highlights: Elite Competition Meets Inclusive Fun
The event featured elite race categories with prize money awarded to the top three finishers across male, female, and nonbinary divisions, showcasing top-tier talent pushing their limits. But the Oakland 5000 was more than just elite racing — heats ran in descending order to welcome runners of every speed and experience level, from seasoned racers to first-timers. Additional contests for best dressed, fastest duo, biggest personal record, and most clever cheer sign added layers of fun and engagement that made the night unforgettable.
Community at the Core
What truly set the Oakland 5000 apart was its community-first ethos. Every participant’s entry directly benefited the 3M Youth Track Club, an inspiring organization empowering Oakland’s youth through mentorship and the joy of running. The crowd’s energy was palpable, with cheers and encouragement echoing around the track, creating an atmosphere that was as supportive as it was competitive.
Capturing the Essence: The Power of Photography Through My Lens

These images go beyond mere documentation; they reveal the heart of the event and the spirit of Renegade Running’s mission to amplify voices often underrepresented in the running world.
By being present and engaged, I was able to freeze moments of grit, joy, and solidarity—whether it was the fierce determination of elite racers or the uplifting camaraderie among friends and families. These photos serve as a mirror for the community, allowing participants to see their strength and identity celebrated. In doing so, the images not only preserve memories but also highlight and elevate the Renegade Running brand, turning the community itself into its most powerful advocate.
Through this visual storytelling, the Oakland 5000 transcends being just a race—it becomes a movement of visibility, empowerment, and collective pride.
