Most beaches in San Francisco have strict rules, but Fort Funston is famous for being a dog-lover's paradise. If your dog is a core part of your family, this is the number one location I recommend. The beach is entirely off-leash, meaning we can capture those genuine, candid moments of your dog running through the surf while you play with your kids or walk hand-in-hand with your partner.

Beyond being dog-friendly, the landscape here is incredibly diverse. In a single one-hour session, we can get photos walking through the lush green ice plant on the bluffs, playing in the massive sand dunes, and running along the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

The Best Spots for Photos at Fort Funston

My goal is never to capture stiff, perfectly posed photos anyway; we are here to capture real life.

To get the best light, I highly recommend scheduling our session about 1.5 hours before sunset. During "Golden Hour," the sun dips low over the Pacific, wrapping the cliffs in a warm, golden glow. And if "Karl the Fog" decides to roll in? We embrace it! The fog acts as a giant natural softbox, creating moody, even, and incredibly flattering light.

Planning Your Session (The Logistics)

There are a few practical things to know before we head to the coast:

• The Walk Down: The path from the parking lot to the beach is very steep and sandy. It is not stroller-friendly, so if you have toddlers, be prepared to carry them on the way back up!
• Parking: There is a large, free parking lot, but it can get very busy on weekends. I always recommend allowing an extra 10-15 minutes to find a spot.
• Facilities: There are basic restrooms near the parking lot, but no changing rooms down on the beach, so arrive in your first outfit!
