What is Golden Hour Photography? (And Why It Matters for Your Family Photos)

Golden hour is the period of daytime shortly after sunrise and just before sunset. During this time, the sun is low on the horizon, creating a soft, warm, and diffused light that is incredibly flattering for portraits. Photographers love golden hour because it eliminates harsh facial shadows, adds a magical glow to the background, and creates a warm, emotional feel in family photos.

If you have ever booked an outdoor family photo session, your photographer probably suggested meeting right after sunrise or an hour before sunset.

As a San Francisco natural-light photographer, I rely completely on the sun to light my subjects. While we can take beautiful photos at any time of day, there is a very specific reason I encourage my clients to aim for the "golden hour."

Here is exactly what golden hour is, why it matters, and how it impacts your Bay Area family portraits.

1. The Magic of Directional Light

When the sun is high in the sky at noon, it beats straight down on your head. This creates harsh, dark shadows under your eyes, nose, and chin (often called "raccoon eyes"), and usually makes everyone squint.

During golden hour, the sun is low on the horizon. The light hits you from a horizontal angle rather than from above. This directional light wraps softly around your face, smoothing out skin tones and completely eliminating those harsh midday shadows. No squinting required!

2. The "Warm" Factor

As the sun gets lower, its light has to travel through more of the Earth's atmosphere. This naturally filters out the cool, blue light waves and leaves behind warm, golden, and red hues. This is what gives golden hour its name! That natural warmth translates beautifully on camera, giving your skin a healthy, radiant glow that simply can't be replicated with artificial studio flashes.

3. The Dreamy, Glowing Backgrounds

Have you ever seen a photo where the family is perfectly lit, but the trees behind them seem to be glowing with a soft, hazy rim of light? That is the magic of golden hour backlighting. By positioning the low sun behind you, we can create a stunning, cinematic halo effect that makes your family "pop" against the background.

4. Navigating San Francisco's Unique Weather

In the San Francisco Bay Area, golden hour comes with a twist: "Karl the Fog." Sometimes, our golden hour is interrupted by the marine layer rolling in. But don't worry! Fog acts as a giant, natural softbox, diffusing the sun's rays and creating beautifully even, flattering light. Whether we get a blazing golden sunset or a moody, softly lit foggy evening, the light during this time of day is always ideal for portraits

Frequently Asked Questions About Golden Hour

What time is golden hour in the San Francisco Bay Area?

The exact time changes throughout the year. In the winter, evening golden hour can start as early as 3:30 PM. In the peak of summer, it might not start until 7:30 PM. When you book a session, I will calculate the exact sunset time for your specific date and location to ensure we catch the best light.

Evening golden hour is past my toddler's bedtime. What should we do?

A happy toddler is always more important than perfect lighting! If a sunset session clashes with bedtime, I highly recommend a sunrise golden hour session. We get the exact same beautiful, soft light in the morning, and we get to beat the crowds at popular San Francisco locations.

Do we have to shoot during golden hour?

While it is highly recommended for that signature warm glow, it isn't mandatory. If we need to shoot midday, I will help us choose a location with "open shade"—like under a canopy of redwood trees or beside a tall building—to protect your family from harsh, direct sunlight.
